Shatpadi towards Vikshit Bharat

-By Om

In an increasingly interconnected world, the role of soft power, economic diplomacy, and bilateral relations has become pivotal in shaping a nation’s global standing and influence. This essay delves into Bharat’s multifaceted engagement with these six dimensions of international relations, exploring how the country’s rich cultural heritage, economic policies, and strategic partnerships contribute to its emergence as a significant player on the world stage. These efforts showcase Bharat’s cultural richness, values, and traditions, enhancing its global image and influence. Furthermore, Bharat’s economic diplomacy endeavors, encapsulated by initiatives like the Act East Policy and participation in regional trade agreements, underscore its commitment to fostering regional integration, economic cooperation, and development. By leveraging its economic prowess and strategic partnerships, Bharat seeks to bolster its position as a key player in the global economy and shape the regional geopolitical landscape as ‘Vikshit Bharat.’

Bharat’s soft power initiatives have played a crucial role in enhancing its global influence and shaping perceptions of the country on the world stage. The International Day of Yoga, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015 and celebrated annually on June 21st, has emerged as one of Bharat’s most successful soft power campaigns. The event, which promotes yoga as a holistic approach to health and well-being, has garnered widespread participation across the globe, with millions of people from diverse backgrounds coming together to practice yoga and embrace its principles of unity, harmony, and inner peace. Through the International Day of Yoga, Bharat has successfully projected its cultural heritage and spiritual values to a global audience, fostering a sense of goodwill and affinity towards the country. Bharat’s cultural diplomacy efforts have also played a significant role in enhancing its soft power and fostering cultural exchange and understanding with other nations. Indian cinema, with its rich storytelling tradition and global appeal, has emerged as a powerful tool for cultural diplomacy, reaching audiences worldwide and promoting cross-cultural dialogue. Bollywood films, in particular, have gained popularity in countries across the world, transcending linguistic and cultural barriers to connect with diverse audiences. By showcasing Indian culture, traditions, and values through cinema, Bharat has been able to build bridges of friendship and cooperation with people from different corners of the globe, contributing to the enhancement of its soft power. The Sanatan concept of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” encapsulates this sentiment, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all beings and the importance of fostering mutual understanding and cooperation among nations.

In addition to soft power initiatives, Bharat promotes cultural exchange programs to deepen ties with other countries and foster mutual understanding. These programs encompass various forms of cultural expression, including music, dance, literature, and visual arts. The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), for instance, facilitates cultural exchange programs with partner countries, hosting performances, exhibitions, and workshops to showcase Bharat’s cultural diversity and heritage. By engaging in cultural diplomacy through exchange programs, Bharat cultivates people-to-people connections, promotes cultural dialogue, and strengthens diplomatic relations with nations around the world.

Bharat’s bilateral relations with key countries play a crucial role in shaping its foreign policy objectives and strategic interests. The United States, as Bharat’s strategic partner and largest trading partner, shares close economic, defence , and strategic ties with Bharat. The Bharat-U.S. Joint Statement during the State Visit of President of the United States to Bharat in January 2015 highlighted the deepening partnership between the two countries, emphasizing cooperation in areas such as defence , counterterrorism, and economic growth. Similarly, Bharat’s relations with China, characterized by both cooperation and competition, have significant implications for regional stability and security. The border dispute between Bharat and China, as well as China’s growing influence in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region, remain key areas of concern for Indian policymakers. The Sanatan concept of “Ahimsa Paramo Dharma” resonates in this context, emphasizing the importance of resolving conflicts through peaceful means and diplomacy.

Bharat’s economic diplomacy initiatives play a key role in promoting regional integration, fostering economic growth, and strengthening ties with neighbouring countries. The Act East Policy, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014, seeks to enhance economic engagement with countries in East and Southeast Asia, leveraging Bharat’s geographical proximity and historical ties with the region. Through initiatives such as the Bharat-ASEAN Summit and the Asia-Africa Growth Corridor, Bharat aims to promote trade, investment, and connectivity, unlocking new opportunities for economic cooperation and development. Moreover, Bharat’s participation in regional trade agreements such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) reflects its commitment to regional economic integration and cooperation. Bharat’s economic diplomacy efforts also extend to Central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, regions with significant economic potential and strategic importance. Bharat’s engagement with Central Asian countries, facilitated by initiatives such as the International North-South Transport Corridor and the Chabahar Port project, aims to enhance connectivity and promote trade and investment in the region. Similarly, Bharat’s ties with the Middle East, characterized by energy cooperation, remittances, and cultural exchanges, contribute to regional stability and economic prosperity. Bharat’s Act West Policy, launched in 2015, seeks to deepen economic ties with Gulf countries and leverage Bharat’s diaspora in the region to promote trade, investment, and technology transfer.

Bharat’s bilateral engagements extend beyond economic and strategic interests to include humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts. As a responsible global actor, Bharat has provided assistance to countries affected by natural disasters, conflicts, and humanitarian crises. For example, in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Bharat played a significant role in providing relief aid and rehabilitation support to affected countries in the region. Similarly, Bharat has been actively involved in peacekeeping operations under the United Nations umbrella, deploying troops and humanitarian assistance to conflict-affected areas such as South Sudan and Haiti. Through its humanitarian efforts, Bharat demonstrates solidarity with the international community and contributes to global efforts to address humanitarian challenges. The Sanatan concept of “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve Santu Niramayah” reflects this spirit of Humanitarian assistance and reliefs, conveying the wish for the well-being and happiness of all beings.

Bharat’s security and defence cooperation initiatives play a crucial role in safeguarding its national interests, promoting regional stability, and countering emerging security threats. The United States, as Bharat’s strategic partner, has emerged as a key defence supplier and security partner, with bilateral defence cooperation spanning defence technology transfers, joint military exercises, and intelligence sharing. The Bharat-U.S. Defence Framework Agreement, renewed in 2015, underscores the commitment of both countries to strengthening defence ties and promoting maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region. Additionally, Bharat’s defence partnerships with countries such as Israel and Russia have contributed to enhancing its defence capabilities and addressing diverse security challenges. Bharat’s engagement with Southeast Asian countries, under the framework of the Act East Policy, aims to promote maritime security, counter piracy, and enhance cooperation in areas such as counterterrorism and disaster relief. Joint naval exercises such as the Malabar Exercise, involving the navies of Bharat, the United States, Japan, and Australia, underscore the growing cooperation among Indo-Pacific countries to maintain a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. Moreover, Bharat’s participation in regional security forums such as the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) reflects its commitment to promoting peace, stability, and security in the region. Through these initiatives, Bharat seeks to contribute to regional security architecture and strengthen its role.

In summary, Bharat’s engagement with soft power, economic diplomacy, and bilateral relations reflects its evolving foreign policy priorities and aspirations for global leadership. Through soft power initiatives, Bharat projects its cultural identity and values, fostering cultural exchange and understanding on a global scale. Meanwhile, its economic diplomacy efforts aim to enhance regional integration, promote economic growth, and strengthen ties with neighbouring countries and beyond. Furthermore, Bharat’s strategic partnerships and bilateral relations underscore its commitment to addressing security challenges, advancing shared interests, and shaping regional and global governance frameworks. By leveraging its cultural heritage, economic strengths, and strategic alliances, Bharat navigates the complexities of international relations, contributing to peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
